Can you think back to a time in the past when you were buzzing with excitement? Perhaps when you were celebrating your greatest achievement, or simply seeing your national sports team score! Yay! Yippeee! Woo-hoo! Yeah – one of those oh-so-fabulous days when you felt like the whole world is yours and you’re on top of it!
Well – if you’re anything like me, you might have instantly felt like performing a victory dance, jumping or throwing your fist in the air to show your wild excitement!
Now one thing is certain – our actions speak louder than words. A favourite saying among NLP practitioners is “watch what people do, not what they say”. Your physiology is nothing else but a projection of your mental state.
So the question is: does it work the other way around? Can a simple change in our physiology instantly bring your best self out of hiding, as quickly and smoothly as pushing a magic button? Is it possible to change our mental state by making a change in our gestures, stance, facial or body movements?
You see – I think you and I are very much alike. As an entrepreneur, I sometimes feel run-down, overwhelmed or stressed out as well. It’s just the way it is. But in those moments – I think you’d agree – we just need to pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off and get back in the game, because there’s no one else to do it for us.
So how quickly could we change our state? In a heartbeat. Here’s the thing – if you force yourself to radically change your physiology, your entire state shifts too.
Anthony Robbins, author of “Awaken the Giant within” puts it like this: “emotion is created by motion” (Yep, it’s true). When we act and feel energetic, excited or confident, we create pleasurable neural pathways in our nervous systems. So whenever we put our body in motion, we send these powerful signals back to our nervous system. I mean frankly speaking, it’s quite impossible to jump around with a happy smile on your face and still feel anxious or exhausted! And no – I don’t believe in faking your state, but rather “acting as if”. It’s all about telling yourself – “I have the energy I want” or “All the strength I need is within me now”, and then making an energetic act to anchor that state into your body.
And it’s so easy! Just envision how you would stand, breathe and look if you were confident that you could achieve anything you set your mind to! Simple changes in your physiology – like making a conscious effort to smile, throwing your shoulders back, standing up tall, straight and walking with a can-do attitude can instantly make yourself feel better. Because guess what – your brain goes “Oh la la … someone’s ready for action!” And in this peak state, you can DO anything. In your business, or in your personal life.
But hey – when you feel down, tired and stressed out, movement may be pretty much the last thing on your priority list. And I know when it comes to excuses, we’re best at finding them. However, if you want to change your state and increase your productivity, getting active is the answer. I like to think of movement like hitting a magic button, which when activated, BINGO – totally changes your entire state. You put your body in motion, release some endorphins, your nervous system loves it, and it’s instantly encouraged to bring back all those positive feelings of excitement, energy and confidence. Pretty magical huh?
And the best part is that all the magic we need is within us. You can use your own body to boost your state. I personally think that physical exercise should be given on prescription. Decades of research show that exercise decreases stress hormones and increases endorphins, chemicals that simply make you feel radiant inside and out.
Cardio exercise in particular has the potential to calm and relax you, so that you feel less stressed and more confident. Wouldn’t you want that for yourself? What is more, whenever we perform a cardio routine, we’re all united by the need to work out, feel the groove and have fun while at it! The release of positive energy in the air is just amazing, and there is a vibe in the whole room that you can almost grab.
So why not benefit from putting your body into motion? You make a move, change your physiology radically and your nervous system gets the hint. Join a cardio class, run, or walk off your doubts, stress and worries. Move physically. And don’t forget to… shake it like you mean it! Motivate yourself with a playlist of uplifting songs. Just allow yourself to let go and enjoy life more! In fact, all you need to do is say YES…. YES to a more rewarding, fun and exciting life!
At my Club Cardio events I like to tell attendees to make some noise and blow the roof in the air! And if you ever get the chance to join us for a workout party, we’re definitely shaking that nightclub!
As adults, we are too often caught up in a day-to-day work routine and we forget to get our fun-meter running. Be playful and fun, and your life will be so much richer. There is no excuse to sit on the sidelines of life. I truly believe that you only live once – to the best person you can be. So don’t miss your chance to live life with overflowing joy and wild adventure. Now come on, start living… Stand up and get a move on!
Make a move! How can physiology impact your state?
